Pouring agar plates

Plates stay open while they set. That is when airborne spores land.

Inoculating grain bags

Room to open, inject and seal bags without working through arm holes.

Liquid culture and syringe work

Open jars, flamed needles and transfers, with filtered air flowing over them.

Contamination gets in while your work is open

A still-air box helps you move less. Steriflo gives you filtered air across the bench during the minutes that matter most.

Factory unboxing

Three Plates in the Airflow. Three in the Room. One Set Grew Mold.

Myco Alchemy Co.'s bench test: six identical agar plates, lids off, same room, same hour. Three sat in front of a running Steriflo. Three sat open on the bench beside it. After one hour we lidded all six and left them five days.

The bench plates grew mold. The plates in the filtered airflow came back clean.

That is the whole argument. Still air reduces movement — it doesn't remove particles. Every jar you open, every breath you take, every movement puts spores back into play. Steriflo pushes a steady stream of H13-filtered air across your work surface, so airborne particles are carried away from your plates instead of settling onto them.

This is Myco Alchemy Co.'s own bench demonstration, not a lab study. Your results depend on your technique and your room.

1 hour lids off, then 5 days sealed
Only the open-bench plates grew mold

Frequently Asked Questions About the Steriflo Flow Hood

Everything you need to know about Steriflo™ before you start

A still-air box keeps air still so less settles on your work. A flow hood blows HEPA-filtered air across your work surface, so particles are carried away and you can work with an open front and both hands free.

Comparable 2×2 flow hoods we checked in September 2026 cost $699 to $899.95. Steriflo is $499 with free US shipping. A single failed batch costs roughly $100–140 in grain, substrate and culture, so about four failed batches cost as much as the hood.

Yes. The open front gives you room for plates, jars and syringes, and the three speeds let you choose steadier, quieter airflow for delicate agar work or more airflow for longer sessions.

Yes. 110V US standard — no voltage adapter needed. This matters because many budget flow hoods on Amazon ship from China with 220V specs and won't work on US outlets. Steriflo is built for the US market. Plug it in, turn it on, start working.

Yes. The spring latch opens without tools, so you can swap the filter yourself. Email hello@gro-myco.com when you need a replacement filter.

12-month warranty against manufacturing defects, from the day it arrives. 30-day returns on unused items in original packaging; the buyer pays return shipping. If it arrives damaged, email photos within 48 hours and we will make it right. Full policy.

It ships free from our warehouse in Elk Grove, California, within 1–3 business days, then typically arrives about 7 days later. We ship to US addresses only. You get a tracking number by email when it ships.

If you grow occasionally, a still-air box is a fine place to start. A flow hood makes sense once you are doing regular agar, grain or liquid culture work and losing batches or time to contamination.
